Post-WW2 military cartoons

A selection of postcards featuring cartoons by Belgian comic artists Jean-Paul (Jean-Pol) van den Broek and Luc Maezelle (Mazel).

Jean Pol

JeanPol

Jean-Paul van den Broeck (alias Jean-Pol) was born in 1943 in Leuven (Louvain), Belgium.  He spent his childhood in Maleizen, a small town next to Overijse. His father sold fertilizers to the local farmers and grape growers, and Jean-Pol began his working life in the family business. He also took evening classes in Decorative Arts and Advertising at the Sint-Lukas School of Arts in Brussels.

In 1981, after a lengthy and successful career in Belgian comics, Jean-Pol won the Bronzen Adhemar, the most important Flemish comics award. Between 15 December 2015 and 29 May 2016 he was the subject of a large career overview exhibition at the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels.

Mazel

Mazel

Luc Maezelle, alias Mazel, was born in Herentals, Northern Belgium in 1931 and attended the Institut Saint-Luc. He worked as an architect between 1956 and 1964, and in his spare time, he designed the sets for several theatre plays. By 1960 he started making comics for Tintin magazine, including short stories and the series 'Cromagnon' (1961), 'L'Affaire Tarentule' (1962-63), 'Bôjolet et Riesling' (1964-66) and the series about the musketeers 'Fleurdelys et Patacrac' (with Vicq, 1966-68). 

Since 2004, Mazel has devoted all of his time to painting oils on canvas and watercolours, engraving, sculpting and large format illustrations in acrylics, watercolours, and oils.
