Esteban Maroto

Esteban (Sebastian) Maroto (b 1942)

Born in Madrid, Estaban Maroto is a Spanish comic book artist.  He began his career in the 1960s with series like Cinco por infinito, published in English by Continuity Comics as Zero Patrol.

In the 1970s Maroto started to be known in his own country when the magazine Trinca (comic) published Alma de Dragón. He joined Warren Publishing in November 1971 when artists from the Spanish agency Selecciones Illustrada started appearing in their three horror magazines, Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella, and remained with Warren until its folding in 1983.  In Italy, he worked for Sergio Bonelli Editore's series Brendon.

According to the magazine Heavy Metal: "Maroto is a legend among illustrators, building his reputation primarily as one of the Spanish artists who dominated Warren Publishing’s horror titles Creepy, Eerie and Vampirella. He went on to draw titles for Marvel and DC, tending toward fantasy work. He’s also a three-time Heavy Metal cover artist who placed several stories in the magazine in the ’80s and early 2000s."
